INSPIRATION BOARD

Wet areas

Whilst traveling, I’ve been in bathrooms where the light source was a mere bulb hanging from a hole in the ceiling. Though it stayed on, I wouldn’t recommend this. Normally, if a light source is not IP rated; covered with a diffusor and it comes into contact with steam, it may fuse leaving you to get clean in the dark.

Don’t get your parade rained on

Knowing what your light fitting is capable of will help you make informed decisions when buying for your exterior or bathroom lighting needs. Check the IP (International/Ingress Protection) rating on the fitting. This gives you an indication of the level of dust or moisture resistance capabilities the fitting you are interested in, has.

Seasonal selection

As with furniture, paint or the scatter cushions on your favourite lounge, there are ever new trends in the lighting industry as well. Light fittings can be changed, added to or swapped around in different areas to help you create a full picture. Decor should include and not exclude light fittings.

Mood matched

When selecting light fittings for your home it’s easy to get overwhelmed with options and trends. I like to compile a “mood” board with images which represent my decor goal to help me stay focused on what I want the end product to look like.

Bigger is better

This season, trends indicate that the larger size light fitting, is in fact more fitting. The Cupola light fitting, like the one in my office, is available various sizes starting at 600mm in diameter and ending at 1200mm. They are available in sand black; sand grey and sand copper. “Sand” is just a fancy description for a matt coating. Also popular this season, are these matt metal tones.

Change it up

Do you have your ceiling already set out with down lights and find yourself now wishing you had dedicated one of those points for a feature pendant instead? I have good news for you. You can still achieve this. Make sure your desired pendant’s ceiling cap covers the hole in the ceiling if the down light was a recessed down light and get your favourite electrical contractor in to fit your pendant to municipal standards.

Cord lengths

When buying pendants or some types of chandeliers, it’s important to know your ceiling to floor height or the distance from the ceiling to where you want your pendant to hang. Most cords come in a standard 1000mm – 1500mm length. If the standard is too short for your modern pitched ceiling, we will be able to sell you a replacement cord with which to get your light fitting hanging at your desired level.

Less is more

Downlights are commonly misinterpreted to be a complete lighting solution. Though extremely valuable in a non-obtrusive, functional context, one should apply them to areas where light is due without aiming to make them a feature.

Know what to show

Pendants should be used as a means to highlight important areas in one’s space. Without them, the same space may seem dull or uninviting. Use the same pendant as a feature to help distinguish one space from another almost signalling to guests: “This is where the festivities occur”.

Glass in the bedroom

For some time it’s been trending to install pendants next to one’s bed to replace bedside table lamps. Though this minimalistic approach allows one to declutter the bedside table, be careful to choose a fitting which will not easily break when bumped. As with everything else, glass pendants have limited lifetimes and the glass shade may be discontinued if it suffers a blow and breaks.
